UN helicopter shot down in Haiti
Violence by criminal gangs has increased in Haiti over the past few weeks. This time there was a shooting incident in the UN helicopter.
After the shooting, the helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing. This information is known from a report of the German press Deutsche Val on Saturday.
Haiti has been in turmoil since 2021. It has come to an extreme in the last few weeks. Haiti’s capital city and its surrounding areas are ruled by various armed groups. This month, an armed group burned down several houses in a town east of the capital. At least 70 people died as a result of this violence. This is the biggest incident of violence in recent times.
News agency AP and US media reported that the helicopter had three crew members and 15 passengers. They were taken safely to the capital. This helicopter belonged to the United Nations World Food Programme. Officially, however, the firing was not reported. As armed groups rule various areas in Haiti, food and other relief supplies are being sent to people only through the United Nations.
Last week, 10,000 people were displaced, according to the United Nations Migration Agency. They said that more than seven lakh people have been displaced since the beginning of September.
