No human rights violator will be sent on peacekeeping mission: Army chief
Chief of Army Staff General Waqar-uz-Zaman has said that if allegations of human rights violations against any army member while deployed in RAB are proven, he will not be sent on peacekeeping missions.
The army chief informed them about this in a bilateral meeting with the officials of the organization at the United Nations headquarters in New York during his visit to the United States.
This information was informed in a press release of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Friday night. Earlier today, General Waqar-uz-Zaman returned to the country.
According to ISPR, during the visit, the army chief met important persons associated with the peacekeeping mission, senior military and civilian officials including the US army chief, and senior military and civilian officials and individuals of Canada at the UN headquarters.
On October 17, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the Chief of Army Staff, the Under Secretary General of the United Nations Department of Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the Under Secretary General of the Department of Operational Support, Atul Kher, the Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights, Ilje Brands Kheris, the Under Secretary General, Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs met in a bilateral meeting with Assistant Secretary General for Middle East, Asia and Pacific Affairs Mohammad Khaled Khyari and Director of Office for Peacekeeping Strategic Partnerships General Jai Menon.
During the meeting with the Chief of Army Staff General Waqar-uz-Zaman, they highly praised the peacekeeping activities of the Bangladeshi peacekeepers, especially the members of the armed forces.
In these meetings, the army chief emphasized on increasing the participation of Bangladeshi peacekeepers in UN peacekeeping missions and increasing the representation of Bangladesh at the policy-making/force command level. Besides, the army chief informed RAB forces not to select them for peacekeeping missions if allegations of human rights violations against them while on deployment are proven.
Also, the army chief highlighted the ongoing activities of the Bangladesh Army as per the directions of the interim government in the current situation of Bangladesh.
Chief of Army Staff General Walker-Uz-Zaman highlighted the many positive aspects taken by Bangladesh Government and Army in the development of socio-economic and peace and order in Chittagong Hill Tracts.
