The picture of Sheikh Mujib is being removed from the new money

It is assumed that the photo of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman may be omitted from the new design bank notes. Such information is known from the sources of the finance department of the Ministry of Finance.

Recently, the Ministry of Finance has asked for a new design for all types of bank notes in the country. The government has taken the initiative to print new notes of 20 taka, 100 taka, 500 taka and 1000 taka.

It is thought not to put the picture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on these four types of notes, but Bangabandhu’s picture may be removed from all the notes in stages. It may take more than a year and a half for the new notes to hit the market.

It is known that on September 29, in a letter signed by Elish Sharmin, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury and Debt Management Division of the Finance Department, the Ministry has requested Bangladesh Bank to send specific design proposals for the new notes. The letter sought the recommendation of Bangladesh Bank’s Currency and Design Advisory Committee overseeing the introduction of new currency designs.

The letter also said that what kind of design would be suitable for circulation of new design and features of currency notes and requested to send the specific proposal to the finance department as soon as possible after accepting the recommendation of Bangladesh Bank’s currency and design advisory committee.

Several officials of the Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance said on condition of anonymity that if the government wanted to put Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s picture on the bank notes, there would have been no need to print new design notes.

It is to be noted that just two days before Sheikh Hasina left the country, the Ministry of Finance had written to Bangladesh Bank to change the printing method of the 500 and 1000 taka bank notes to print Sheikh Mujib’s image more clearly and to change the printing method of the 20 taka and 100 taka notes.
