    The court has declared Dr. Shahadat Hossain as the Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation.

    The court declared Dr. Shahadat Hossain the mayor in the was case filed by him, the mayor candidate is of BNP, seeking cancellation of Chittagong City Corporation (CHASIC) elections.

    On Tuesday (01 October) at 12 noon, the court of Election Tribunal and Joint District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Khairul Amin gave this verdict.

    Advocate Arshad Hossain Asad said, in the case filed by Dr. Shahadat Hossain, the court declared him as mayor.

    Besides, it has been ordered to publish the gazette within 10 days.

    On February 24, 2021, the candidate for mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain filed a case against 9 people including the Election Commissioner. The defendant in this case was the former mayor of Chasik M. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, Regional Election Officer Md. Hasanuzzaman, Secretary to Election Commissioner, Chief Election Commissioner Abul Manjur, MA Matin, Khokon Chowdhury, Muhammad Waheed Murad, Md. Jannatul Islam. No lawyer was present in court for them.

    The prosecution alleges that after receiving the boat’s symbol, Chasic officers started contacting Rezaul Karim. Means only formalities were completed on that day in the name of election. Because of that, the vote tally in the election has not yet been received. EVM print copy is not given from any centre. Between 4 and 6 percent of votes were counted till noon on polling day. But according to the survey, 22 percent votes were cast.

    In the election held on January 27, 2021, boat candidate Rezaul Karim Chowdhury won by getting 3 lakh 69 thousand 248 votes. In that election, his closest rival BNP’s mayoral candidate Shahadat Hossain got 52 thousand 489 votes in the symbol of a grain of rice.

    The former organizing secretary of the Central BNP and the former president of Chittagong Metropolitan BNP Dr. Shahadat Hossain was nominated for the post of Mayor in the 24 February 2020 Chasik election after the Parliamentary Board meeting of BNP.
